Yeung Hau Temple, Tai O
Built in 1699 and located at Po Chu Tam in Tai O, the temple is a Grade I historic building and the oldest Hau Wong temple in Hong Kong.
In addition to the main building, there are two smaller halls on the two sides and a yard in the middle - the style of a three-bay and two-hall building. The temple was built with green tiles, granite and wood. The entrance is supported by granite pillars. A large quantity of Shiwan porcelain sculptures and wood sculptures can be found in the temple. These represent the grandeur of the structure and the craftsmanship of builders.
Hau Wong (Yang Liangjie)
During the final years of Southern Song Dynasty, the last emperor was chased after by the Yuan army, who were to kill him. Despite his failing health, the brave and loyal general Yang Liangjie protected the emperor. Yang stayed in Lantau briefly as he was protecting the emperor. His courage moved villagers and he was honoured in the temple by villagers. “Hau Wong” is a Chinese acronym that combines two titles given to Yang before and after he passed away.
Historical relics
Having been erected for more than 300 years, the temple is home to a wealth of historical relics, including a bell cast in 1699, a tin altar table created in 1860 and an inscribed stone tablet made in 1877.
The age-old ancient temple is usually included as a stop after touring around Tai O fishing village.
