Three Treasures of Ngong Ping

Thanks to its rich biodiversity, Lantau Island is the home for over 100 species of butterflies, making up 40% of the whole in Hong Kong. It is a superb place for butterfly viewing. Rare species can also be seen here, especially the “Three Treasures of Ngong Ping” – Tamil Grass Dart (Taractrocera ceramas), Striped Bush Hopper (Ampittia virgata) and Large Three-ring (Ypthima motschulskyi).

Tamil Grass Dart lives on expansive and dry grassland or on hill slopes. Striped Bush Hopper is unique to Lantau. Large Three-ring can be found in highlands. The pattern on their wings resemble the big eyes of animals. They are easy to spot. 

In addition to the three treasures, visitors can also look at other butterfly species in Lantau. Some of which are Common Birdwing, Malayan, Chestnut Tiger, Constable, Common Tiger, Red Lacewing, etc. Common Birdwing and Chestnut Tiger are both very rare species and are protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
