Tai O used to be an important production site of government salt. Since the salt industry went into decline, saltpans were abandoned. Various species of mangroves were planted on here during 2005 – 2007. The Yim Tin Mangroves span more than 20 hectares and boasts rich ecological resources. 90% of native mangrove species, including Kandelia candel, Aegiceras corniculatum and Avicennia marina, can be found here. The Yim Tin Mangroves offer a habitat for many creatures, including egrets, fiddler crabs, mudskippers, etc. This is an ecologically significant site.
