Ngong Ping Trail
The whole trail is 5.7km long and the section between Tung Chung and Ngong Ping takes about 4 hours to complete if you reserve some time for a mid-way break. Formerly a rugged Mountain trail and also known as Ngong Ping 360 Rescue Trail, it connects Tung Chung and Ngong Ping and is now used as the rescue and maintenance of Ngong Ping 360. When the cable car system was constructed, part of the trail was paved with wooden boards as a way to preserve the natural environment.
The alignment of Ngong Ping Trail is almost identical to that of Ngong Ping Cable Car. The trail begins with a rather high concentration of steps – within the 1km from ground level to cable tower no. 3, the trail has elevated 300m; steps are rather steep in this section. After cable tower no. 3, however, you will be able to overlook the scenic views of Tung Chung Bay and Hong Kong International Airport. Continue to cable tower no. 4, you will walk pass the famous “stairway to heaven”, i.e. the boardwalk built by Ngong Ping 360. Proceed to reach cable tower no. 5, the highest point of the trail – Nei Lak Shan angled station. This is where you can see the boundless sky and mountainous terrain. Raise your heads and you can look at the cable car rope way from a unique angle. Descend towards the exit to Ngong Ping and you will see the Big Buddha – the perfect conclusion to your hike along the trail.
There are no exit point or check points to replenish your supplies, so do consider your physical strength and the supplies you bring with you.
