Ngong Ping Piazza
Ngong Ping Piazza has four main components, namely new Pai Lau, Bodhi Path, Di Tan and a Chinese landscaped garden. It connects with Po Lin Monastery, the Big Buddha, Ngong Ping Cable Car, Ngong Ping Village and Wisdom Path. This is where visitors could get started and tour to observe the religions and nature of Ngong Ping.
Architecturally, the piazza is intensely Buddhist. As you leave Ngong Ping Village, you will be walking along the Bodhi Path, where you can appreciate the stone statues of the “Twelve Divine Generals” as well as 40 lotus-shaped stone lanterns installed on both sides. Arriving at Ngong Ping Piazza, you will be surrounded by Chinese structures that emit an aura of antiquity: the New Pai Lau is built to reflect the northern architectural style of Qing dynasty; Di Tan (Altar of Earth) is where religious rituals are held from time to time; the landscaped garden is constructed to echo with the design of Po Lin Monastery.
The stone statues of the “Twelve Divine Generals” along Bodhi Path are the protectors of the Healing Buddha and also guardians of the hours of the day, each responsible for a two-hour period. In addition, they represent the twelve Chinese zodiac signs, as denoted by the different zodiac signs on their crowns. Each stone statue measures 1.8m in height and weigh about 1 tonne.
Walking through the New Pai Lau and along the Bodhi Path paved with lotus tiles, you will be entering the “Buddhist World in the South” and reach Di Tan of Po Lin Monastery. Di Tan piazza is primarily tiled with grey granite paving. The four lotus ponds built on the perimeter facilitate the staging of religious ceremonies.

How to get there
From Tung Chung Cable Car Terminal (Exit B of Tung Chung MTR station), take a 25-minute cable car ride to Ngong Ping. The Piazza is about 5 minutes on foot from Ngong Ping Village. |
